Oh, the Peace, oh the Cold, oh the "Let's Leave this Place."

It was beautiful, it was peaceful, it was hot chocolate and fires and stories. And then the power went off and people started getting antsy because they had no idea what was happening in the world, because they were supposed to be scheduling a meeting and flights, and because the TV wouldn't work and the lights wouldn't turn on.

We read by firelight and went to bed early and the parents took turns waking up every hour to keep wood on the fire, until we didn't and it went out for a while. And the house was down into the 50s and we kept thinking, any minute, the power would come on. Except for when we called the power company they couldn't even give an estimate for our zip code which gave us pause.

And then today after more than 24 hours of fun, the power company said it could be another couple of days but the good news was we would get $50 credit on our bill if we went 120 hours without power. And the fun was over! Really, 120 hours. With temperatures in the high 20s and low 30s (it is warmer now). Really!

And we thought of all the people we love and all of the people who would host us and headed to Portland for a hotel where we could all have a bed and be warm and take endless baths and swim in the pool and get online and watch tv.

And thus ended, a nearly 3-week stretch in which we lived within our budget. It was nice while it lasted. But I have to say, these beds are comfy.

At the old house we had to stoke the fire for 3 days. A must when we built this house was a wood burning stove and a gas fireplace so, when the power goes out again, and it will, we are fine. Plus, I don't have 3 kids to keep busy!!
