from Ben's mom
We were on a drive this weekend in a neighborhood we don't visit much when M spotted a bit of East Coast civilization. Panera Bread Company just opened a new store here in Olympia. Not only did waves of homesick nostalgia for Virginia hit us, but we have a little history with Panera.
Five years ago this June, a new friend of mine offered to go along with me when I went car shopping. It started out with three of us as my roommate Dana was originally going with me. But when she heard I had an offer from our mutual friend, she said the two of us would be fine and she would bow out. We spent the day driving, trying to find the impossible: a car in good condition that I could pay cash for that would pass the rigors of Virginia inspection.
When we were weary of looking and hungry we stopped at Panera Bread for some lunch. And he paid for my lunch. I objected a long the lines of "But you're the one doing ME a favor." He insisted. And I started to wonder about this favor and if there was more to it.
So as we popped in for bagels this weekend (Ben LOVES bagels) we told Ben this story and how Daddy never would have dreamed that buying me lunch at Panera would land him on the opposite side of the country with a wife and two kids less than five years later.

So I'm wondering... was M aware that he was so interested by this time, or was he still playing the denial game? (I'm still laughing at y'all, because even my usually-oblivious husband noticed how often you hung out in a certain office.)

Oh, he says he knew from Day 1. He just envisioned that in 5 years he would just be getting around to proposing.... It took me longer to figure it out and then I wasn't nearly so patient. -rlr
interestingly enough, that is also where my wife and I got our start -- at a lunch at Panera to fulfill a bet that we had made about a paper.
