Day 10 took us to a wonderful relaxing home on the marshes of S.C. at the home of our friends Jenny & Kim who have known me since I was a baby in Germany. We looked for armadilloes and alligators to no avail but did enjoy a night walk on the waterfront in Beaufort, SC.
Day 11 we explored Charleston with friends David and Colleen. I had a mental picture of Charleston that completely matched reality. We walked five miles in Charleston walking through alleys and courtyards, viewing gorgeous churches, and the beautiful waterfront. We also went to Charles Towne Landing, where the first English settlement in S.C. was located. We toured an old wooden sailing boat and learned about archeological digs on the site. It was a toasty 89 degrees, and the locals told us the record for that day in history was 90 degrees.
Day 12 we relaxed and chatted with Jenny. We headed out in the car to just before 1pm and within an hour Ben told us he felt terrible and had intense stomach pain. We headed on to Asheville, NC, where we had dinner with good friends from Virginia days, Leah and Andrew and their sweet brood. I really thought Ben was constipated or had appendicitis. Sadly for them, as we left their house I learned that the family reunion had turned disease-infested and others had become sick. Everleigh came down with it and none of us is feeling real great today. Today's plans have gone from "Tour Asheville, Cherokee, and Gatlinburg" to make it to the next stop without getting vomit in the car.
No Reitz family reunion is complete without illness. No Reitz family road-trip is complete without illness. So I guess it is par for the course. Meanwhile, we hope Ben is about to feel better, even as we monitor Kyrie and wait for Ev to get the worst of it. She has Ben's early symptoms so probably, the worst is ahead for her. Fun times.
Meanwhile, our hope is that all those we have visited with in the last couple of days will stay healthy.
