Our kids love a good family movie night. But the trick is finding a movie that everyone can enjoy--parents and different age levels. I'm always looking for recommendations, both new releases and classics. Here are brief reviews of two recent family movie night films:
Mr. Popper's Penguins was one I put off watching for a long time. I've read part of the book and couldn't relate at all and the story didn't interest either parent. But movies with animals always go far with the kids, and so we broke down and watched it. And were pleasantly surprised. The antics of the penguin were enough to keep Everleigh happy and Ben and Kyrie could understand enough of the story to be engaged. And, well, uhm, Jim Carrey is pretty funny in this movie and the parents could appreciate that. This one has some serious subjects (divorced parents, a preteen girl and her obsession with a boy, business relationships, etc...) but managed to be clean and wholesome viewing for young children. My grade: A-
Dolphin Tale
I was attracted to the strong cast and again, animal movies go far with my offspring. But this movie went beyond my expectations weaving together a story of an injured dolphin, a wounded warrior, and an unhappy child. I loved the characters and the story and all of the kids were able to relate to this movie on some level. Ben was thrilled that there was a homeschooled kid in it and I could relate to the mom character trying to do what's best for her kids amidst a lot of opinions and life obstacles. Morgan Freeman brought some humor and we were all riveted. Grade: A
Ben: "It was beautiful and a little funny." Grade: A
Kyrie: "I love this movie."
Evie: "The dolphin swims in the water. I like that part."
