Babies

I took some time to watch the documentary Babies last week. It was memorable, a wonderful look at the differences in culture. Four babies are followed for their first year of life. They are from: Namibia, Africa, Mongolia, Tokyo, Japan, and San Francisco. Obviously the differences are vast and the film is largely silent (except when the babies begin to chatter themselves). But the director creates a clear theme as he explores the babies interaction with animals, the process of learning to crawl, walk, and talk. Eating is a main theme and there is one very memorable scene with a corncob.  I loved this film but for those offended by National Geographic (i.e. specific differences in dress or undress in other cultures), this film is not for you.

I watched it a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I just sat on the couch smiling for an hour. So sweet!
