Kyri refused to get in the water at swimming lessons yesterday. All was fine; she asked me to put her hair up right before her lesson was to begin. She was dressed in her swim suit. And then it was noon and she wouldn't get in the water. She didn't cry but put her head down on and drew up her body into one non-conforming stance and said she wouldn't do it. I did all those things you swear you'll never do as a parent (before you have a 3-yr old) and threatened, cajoled, and attempted to bribe her. Her teacher worked with me.
Ten minutes later I finally gave up. I knew she was serious when she said she was "too tired" and wanted to go home and take a nap.
I was thankful for an older mom at the pool who has raised seven children (ages 5-22). She took her on her lap and held her while I finished a conversation with a woman I really like but who couldn't seem to get that I was in the middle of a crisis and couldn't just chat. Then they both assured me that age 3 is the most difficult and baffling age and that it would get better.
In the afternoon she told me she would be fine today. I'm hoping so. I told her there are two more lessons and then she is done for the summer. No more sessions for Kyri. Ben wants to try and I'm even hesitant to do that.

Whoever coined the phrase, "The Terrible Twos", never had a 3 year old. I'm finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I hope you let Ben at least try and if he doesn't want to get in, so be it. No problem. Maybe later.
Poor Kyri: three must be hard.
Poor Mom: three must be hard!!
