The Delight of a Reading Child

I am not big into playing with my kids. It is something I feel I should do but not something I enjoy. One of the joys of having more than one is that I used to play with Ben when he was 4 and under and now he has taken over playing toddler and preschool games with Kyri.

This week he started playing "ball" with Everleigh. He knew that I used to sit on the floor with him and roll a ball back and forth saying "Ball to Ben; ball to Mommy." So this week, he started "Ball to Evie. Ball to Ben." And I smiled. I am out of that developmental exercise. Whew!

But I love to read to my kids. Especially as the books start to have a plot and we get past all those children's books that win awards and appear to have been written in a drug-induced stupor. (Seriously, have you read Good Night Moon?)

Mike is also a huge reader. And Ben is our child. I've found him in his room reading by the fading light. He could barely make out the words but he will hang on until it is impossible to see. And today we stopped off at a coffee shop where they have children's books. Ben grabbed a book and headed for a table and sat looking like a miniature man pouring over his book. Send him off to make his bed or do any other chore and everything will get very very quiet. Twenty minutes later I'll ask how he is progressing and hear the rustle of pages..."Oh, I'm not done yet." And I have to forgive him. I would rather read than do my chores too.

Mom used to find me under the covers with a flashlight and a book. Could be why I needed glasses most of my life.
glad you have lots of readers in your house. Oh, the wonders that can be found in a book!

I was an all-night reader as a kid...okay, as an adult, too. And I'd much rather read than do almost anything else. Add coffee and the outdoors to the reading and it's heaven on earth.
