I used to work a lot at homeschooling and book fairs. I remember colleagues who would take little breaks to go peruse the wares at other booths. I didn't get it. Nothing about homeschooling curriculum interested in me. And I imagined I could never homeschool since I was bored at the very idea of having to choose a curriculum.
And then I had a child. A very bright child.
Philosophically I'm not really a big Kindergarten fan. I'm generally convinced that Kindergarten was invented so working parents could get rid of their kids for cheaper earlier. My K-teacher friend assures me that kids today are learning in kindergarten what we did in 1st grade. But I still think age 5 is a year for continued gross motor development and playing outdoors. Unfortunately reality has dealt me:
1) Condo-living with no yard and only a deck.
2) Nine months of near constant rain.
3) A child that taught himself to read before he could talk.
4) A bored child who will go to the computer or television to entertain himself.
So we are embarking on the dreaded Kindergarten.
Now granted, I'm going to be having a baby half-way through the year. I don't really expect to fully follow any schedule and I don't plan on spending more than an hour a day on this. But for the fall at least, I want to give both kids a little more of my time and this was one way I could do it.
We have a new schedule posted on the refrigerator. And my working hours are more limited. Books have been arriving all week in the mail and by UPS. I have chosen and now we are ready to begin. Or as ready as I'll ever be.

Hi Rachelle, I remember admiring your mom for teaching you and Mark at home. It was an impossible concept for me at the time. Now there are many who home school their children here in Chesnee.
I enjoy reading your blog , and especially like your comments about the first lady of S.C. Our govenor ran on family values, and every picture showed him with his wife and 4 boys. He sure let a lot of people down with his actions. At least he has a wife of which we can be proud.
Let me know if there is anyway I can help- been there and done that.
