Mumps

from the mom

We enjoy reading some Richard Scary books published in the 1950s. I particularly love how unpolitically correct they are. Lots of stay-at-home moms and no "mailpeople" or "firefighters"-just mailmen and firemen. And diseases floating around that most 21st century western children have never heard of.

Yesterday my little hypochondriac came to me with:

"Mom, I have mumps." I nearly died laughing.

I love those books! I made a Lowly Worm doll out of felt when I was a kid. Where did you find the original versions?

I lucked out and found them at a garage sale. There are four big volumes: Things to know, Fun with Words, Going Places, and Best Stories Ever. They are a lot of fun.

I'd never encountered the Scarry books until my mother-in-law gave one to the kids. Darren exclaimed over it; apparently he'd loved it as a child. I taught Addie some of her reading from the "Picture Dictionary." Our children still love reading the books.

Lots of obsolete references, yes!
