Why Easter Matters

from the mom

Today would be Grandpa's 87th birthday. I've thought of him a lot recently. Yesterday we drove past a skate park teeming with bikers and skaters and I remembered the last time I was in Medford with him. We had gone up to my see his mother's grave (my great-grandma Bones) and as we left he noticed the skate park across the street. He stopped the car and we all went and watched for awhile. He loved that kind of stuff.

I have trouble clutching at the reality of heaven. I can't fathom a life beyond this one. But when I think of the people I miss most, my Grandpa, cousin Shannon, and Uncle Ray, I feel the power of Easter. The grave isn't the end for them, nor is it for me. And for me that is the tangible reason for the celebration of today. Christ defeated death. Today is Independence Day.
