A Birthday Party

from the mom

I'm seeing Christmas anew through the eyes of my son. I tend to be solemn about the day and wax philosophical about Christ's coming and its meaning for our lives. But my 3-year old is celebrating a birthday. And when you celebrate a birthday party you include mythical characters (anyone ever have a themed party with a Disney character?). He loves Rudolph, Santa, and Frosty. And thinking they are great doesn't in any way take from the Baby Jesus and all that his birth means. It has been good for me to lighten up a little. So we talk about shepherds, angels, stars, and mangers. And reindeer, presents, candy canes, and snowmen. We're having quite a party!

Rachelle,

If you are having a birthday party, you might want to use one of our traditions- have a "birthday cake" after Christmas dinner. Often the candle on the cake is the Christ candle from the Advent wreath.

Yes, our kids loved singing Happy Birthday to Jesus, too.

It's amazing how kids can take real life and mix it up with fantasy without being any the worse for it. And they like it so much better that way. Good for you for letting Ben invite who he wants to his party! Our nativity scene this year includes a purple spider and two pink ponies.
