from Ben's mom
Our day started sometime around 4:20am when I noticed flashing lights reflecting off our bedroom wall. I looked through the shades to see two fire trucks, two medic vehicles and at least one police car. Emergency technicians were attempting CPR on someone on the sidewalk, though not very vigorously I noted. In the dark we couldn't see much, but we did make out a motorcycle in front of the person. A few minutes later, ER techs covered the body.
M made it back to sleep after an hour or so; I got somewhat close but never quite there. The body was removed about two hours later after pictures had been taken. The police continued investigating until sometime after 8:45am when we left home. All we know is this. We don't think another vehicle was involved, just a tree, but we aren't too sure. Neither of us heard anything other than the sprinklers turning on at 4am. We wondered if he hit the wet pavement and slid but the newspaper suggested the accident occurred prior to that.
I plan to find a different route to the mailbox for awhile. It has been a reminder of the brevity of life.
