Reading

from Ben's mom

Ben has decided he wants to read. I am opposed to teaching him right now as reading this early is not good for little eyes, and I would kind of like to conquer a few other things first (like potty training). During church yesterday he was reading the Gospel of John with intensity. At one point, it was taken from him and when returned it was upside down. He promptly righted the Bible. Today he was reading W.E.B. Griffin's "The Last Heroes." Alternatives (Curious George, etc...) were provided that involved pictures and he would not be deterred. For twenty minutes he faithfully read this 342-page hardback until I took it away. This did not please him.

We attended a used toys sale over the weekend and let Ben roam where he would, to see what he would choose. There were musical instruments (in the past a big hit) and remote control cars, etc.... He found something designed for a much-older child that looks like a Blackberry and has a calculator, dictionary, and spell check. This was the toy for him.

In the bathtub, he wants me to tell him what his applique letters and numbers are and he brings me words he recognizes and points them out to me. His dad taught himself to read very young (4, I think) but I thought he took after my family!

Hey hey!! I can't WAIT until Joshua wants to learn how to read. Although I suspect I can't place such early hopes on a 5 day old. =D But think of how convenient it would be if Ben could read to his sibling?! The time! The enjoyment! The pleasure!

I always knew Ben was a smart boy. He does not fail me now. He's taking after both his wonderful parents. :) Go Ben!

You know, if he wants to read, you're not likely to deter him for long. Wow, that's impressive. See what happens when he sees Mama and Daddy reading? Maybe you should start watching more TV.
