from Ben's mom
Friday, some friends got together, segregating by sex. Guys (including Ben) at one place to play video games and girls at another place to plan supper club and watch What Not To Wear: Maternity edition. The girls got the cheesecake-filled strawberries!
Now I've never been much of a style person. Every once in awhile I decide I look frumpy and start trying to do my nails or I change my hair. But it never lasts. I am decidedly unconcerned with what's in fashion. Comfort is my first concern.
But I like to think I'm relatively with it. I discovered I am not. The three ladies chosen for a maternity-wear makeover (one was actually post-partum) all immediately had all the black thrown from their closets! BLACK! That is my style foundation, the rock on which I base "my look." So I took a hit right off. The ladies were given a number of style tips, a new wardrobe, hair and makeup. I thought ultimately it was the hair and makeup that actually changed their appearances most.
So I went home and forgot about it.... Why would I take style tips from a gay guy wearing plaid pants?
Until I got dressed the next morning. Then I examined my closet of black maternity wear and found a few non-black items. Sunday, M ironed (yes, he is perfect!) me a light green dress and I wore a white shirt. (I even found non-black footwear.) Oh, and I pulled out my makeup and started spending 5 minutes on that with a voice in my head saying, "You can't take 5 minutes to look like you care what you look like for your husband and children?"
Now ultimately I know I'm not "forever changed." I still value character and spiritual substance above what I pull from my closet. But five minutes on makeup isn't going to keep me from cleaning the house or reading to my son. And I might just feel a little better about myself this week.

Whoever says black is out is seriously disturbed (dripping with scorn a la Elle Woods). Black is GREAT! It's classic, goes with everything, and is an excellent wardrobe staple. Of course it's also good to branch out now and then, but throwing out all the black items?? Oh, well, I guess if the program was footing the bill...
I'm with you on the whole time and effort thing. Every once and a while I'll go on a makeup kick and really like it, but it's sooo much easier to plead the low-maintenance look. Sometimes it's just laziness - although I like to think I'm doing my skin a favour by not gooping it up every day. =)
I think that's what make-up and putting a little effort into your look should be about: feeling good about yourself (and being attractive for the hubby).
I'm proud of you, R. And no need to throw out all your black--just don't go head-to-toe-black-yoga-wear 24/7 like the gal in the show.
I loved the little make-up tips on the show. I usually wear little or a lot of make-up thinking I need to wear everything to look nice. But I liked how the ladies didn't do to much and looked great. Black is good to have...but color is lots of fun too:-)~missi
Way to go, R! Love that show, even if Clinton does wear plaid pants.
I'm not going to discourage you against makeup or style--I need to work on mine--but I totally agree with you on the comfort side of things!!! I just got a great pair of black sandals from Born (I can't figure out how to write it with the little Swedish dots over the 'o'). :-) They are sooo comfortable, but still feminine. :-)
I know the show is great, but really...you are so right: why take fashion advice from a gay man in plaid? ICK!
