A Fine Example

from Ben's mom

This morning as I was cleaning up after breakfast, I caught NPR's interview with Nicole Buffett, the 30-year old granddaughter of billionaire Warren Buffett. She discussed his recent decision to give away the bulk of his fortune and described herself as a little surprised but "very happy." Buffett believes her grandfather is fulfilling her late grandmother's wishes.

The elder Buffett believes that leaving his wealth to his children wouldn't be beneficial to them. Nicole says she was raised middle class but given an "upper class education." Her grandfather paid for her education but she still needed to have a part-time job through college to make it. After that she was on her own, and hasn't received support since then.

I admire Buffett's philosophy and his granddaughter proved an outstanding spokesman in support of it. She obviously has pride in her family and pride that she hasn't been handed a fortune but had to make it in the world herself.

I'll probably never have to worry about leaving a fortune behind, but we have talked about what we want to give our children. An education is what we both agree is worthy. Cars, houses, IPODS...well, they'll be on their own.

Too much money, that's just a start of what's worng with Paris Hilton. Too bad her grandfather wasn't like Buffett. Might have done the family some real good.

I always admire someone who has a lot of money and can give it away.

I wonder what I really want to "leave" to my children. That's something to think about (since it's not likely going to be money).
