Driving Across Texas in the Pouring Rain

from Ben's mom

Last night we left Ben with friends and joined friends Dan and Amanda for a childless dinner at The Melting Pot. It was a great time.

When we returned to pick Ben up, the comment was made: He sure responds to music.

His love and interest in music is evident to everyone. He often makes his preferences known and will ask us to change the song. The first thing he does in the morning is ask that the radio or a CD be put on.

I started to think back to the first time I really felt Ben do a lot of kicking. I had felt little jabs here and there but in September of 2003, I was driving through Texas on a business trip. I was exhausted, working 2-3 college fairs a day and driving from Houston to San Antonio to Austin to Ft. Worth to Dallas. In the Austin to Ft. Worth leg, the rain started pounding down. I was so tired and the likelihood of hitting high water or hydroplaning was high and I needed all my concentration. So I turned up the radio very loud; Ben started kicking like crazy. I remembered the joy of feeling him move and my appreciation for one more thing to keep me alert.

Looking back, I realize he was responding to the radio. I am not sure whether he was enjoying it or asking me to please find something other than country, but even at 5 months in utero, his personality and interests were forming. It makes me excited to see where they will take him.
