I highly recommend cancelling your credit cards every once in a while. Or trying to at least. We realized that we don't need four and two of them are frequent flier accounts with annual fees. So I tried to cancel one of the frequent flier cards today. The result: a short pep talk on how I had been an excellent customer for 11 years and my annual fee was paid up until August.
"No, I value your great customer service but we have another frequent flier credit card and we prefer that airline."
"Ma'am, if you keep this card open today, I can credit your frequent flier account with 5,000 miles." Hmmm.... That would get me to a whole ticket.
The conversation ended with "Boy, you guys are good." How do they manage to get you every time. But like I said, I recommend trying to cancel those cards now and then.
