from Ben's mom
I was glad to see that the October lyrics have finally been found and returned to U2. A few discrepancies, however. After the lyrics were stolen in 1981, the band did not return to Portland until 2001. They admitted to being bitter (I was at the 2001 concert) and played venues within driving distance (Seattle, Eugene), but would not play Portland until 2001. There, on Easter weekend, Bono did ask about the briefcase and then said after 20 years, they were in Portland to show forgiveness. I flew clear across the country to be there for the occasion.
Now about these groupies who took the lyrics in the first place. Why would you steal the briefcase in the first place and then store them in an attic? Selling them could create legal trouble, but would returning them to the band-even anonymously-be so bad? Did they simply not notice that the upstart band (in 1981) went on to become THE Band of the 1980's (and some would say the 90's too)? Did someone really forget to pack them up when they left the house? Or was the culprit (or culprits) merely very blonde? Hmmm....

My theory on the U2 lyrics is that the women who stole them didn't know what to do with them. They were at that time in their lives when they were doing crazy things. I know we have all experienced that. They might have left them on purpose so they wouldn't be caught with them. You have to give them credit for never trying to sell them. The amazing thing is they stole them before the band became an incredible money making, life changing machine.
