from Ben's mom
Sunday afternoon we received a call from good friend Sarah Mehrens. She and another friend Jonathan Bechtle had been on their way home from working in Spokane when they were forced to land in Portland because of the low visibility in Seattle (and low fuel). As there were no connecting flights to Dulles that day, they and a contingent of others opted to stay in Portland. Sarah called and we took an impromptu trip down I-5 to see them.
Ben was smitten with Sarah (and vice versa). He has just discovered the strength of his lungs and tends to practice very high-pitched vocals in public places. This made our dinner at the Widmer Gasthaus noisy. Ben choked on an oyster cracker which caused for more excitement than we would have liked. Fortunately his dad retrieved it quickly but both Ben and his mom were unnerved for awhile.
We tried to give Sarah and Jonathan a brief introduction to Portland. Took them to the Rose Garden and then strolled on the Waterfront.

Lucky Sarah! Wish I could have been out there too.
Rachelle, how are you liking "The Iron Lance?" I usually love Lawhead, but I didn't find that one all that interesting.

I've been disappointed in how "canned" some of the dialogue has been and at how easy it has been to predict a few things. Definitely not as good as Avalon or Byzantium. However, unlike Aeschylus and all the other non-fiction I've been reading, it makes good bedtime reading. I don't have to be too awake!
