Storytime

Recently Mom has been waking me up in the morning. I guess she thinks I sleep too late. I am always a little groggy and I appreciate Mom recognizing that I need things to be quiet and move slowly while I adjust to the morning. So Mom gets me up and we take a blanket and snuggle up in the papasan together and read a story while I wake up. Here are some of my favorites:

Arty the Smarty by Faith McNulty. Arty is a smart little fish who gets out of all kinds of predicaments but who only has one dream--to make a big splash. Good luck finding this one. It is a vintage book that Mom picked up for a quarter at a garage sale and wanted to read to me before she made a big profit on Ebay.

Never Tease A Weasel by Jean Conder Soule. This one is a rhyming book with all the fun things you can do with animals, but "never tease a weasel." This one is also hard-to-find but found by Mom at a garage sale for .50 and now being sold on Ebay.

The Fire Cat by Esther Averill is a fun book about a cat who gets adopted by some firemen at a firehouse and how he becomes a useful cat. The cats name is Pickles, a word I really liked hearing Mom say. This one is a bit easier to find.

Hobo Dog by Thacher Hurd is a book about a dog who hops trains and likes junkyards. In this one, he helps a robber cat and the engineer befriends him for his good deed. Also a hard-to-find book.

We have read a few others but those are the ones we liked best. Maybe I will share with you some of the other reading I am doing sometime.

Dear Ben,

I'm glad to hear that you are making good use of your morning time. The books sound like excellent choices.

One that Addie and Stuart would suggest is "Are You My Mother" by P.D. Eastman (although Addie insists it's by Dr. Seuss; to Addie, all books are by Dr. Seuss). It's such a hit that both of them sat through it twice tonight. Your godfather doesn't think it's quite as interesting as they do, but it has great opportunities for funny voices. Listen for the Snort, especially.

Addie would like to warn you, though, that sometimes lazy parents try to change the words of the story as they read - usually about the third time through, to make it go faster. You must not permit this to happen. Insist on correct readings all the time.

God bless you, little Ben.

Those first two books are some of my favorites, Ben. How much is your mom selling them for? Actually I have Never Tease a Weasel, but I still haven't found Arty the Smarty.
