Machine Guns, Secret Caves, and Belfast

from Ben's mom

29 Oct 1994

We knew we had crossed in to N. Ireland when we came through the town of Omagh and saw signs for a checkpoint. The whole road turned and as I made the corner, there were two men in uniform with machine guns pointed directly at us. I was a little unsettled....

We continued down the coast to a little village called Cushendun. We parked in the car park of a little hotel called The Bay Hotel. Anna had read that there were sea caves on the side of the hotel. There were no signs or indication...but we hiked around back and discovered a driveway through a cave and on the other side a monastery. We went on in and then down onto the beach. The waves hit the rocks and we sat there quietly enjoying the peace. The best places never have postcards.

Continued on into Belfast. It was so dark and dismal and we likened it to Beirut, or post-WWII Berlin. (These "B" cities!) We kept driving until we found a town called Bangor and a row of guest houses on the Bay. A proprietor named Phaile took us in.

Absolutely love your flashbacks to the British Isles. Keep them coming whenever you feel nostalgic! My must-see list is growing fast. A good friend of mine from Bible study is from Bangor, and next week being reading week, she's talking nonstop of how she gets to go home for a visit. Lucky her...
