The Prince and Me

from Ben's mom

Not too long ago, we rented The Prince and Me. I am a sucker for a romantic comedy and fortunately my husband is a sucker for me, and occasionally puts up with it. I also enjoy Julia Stiles as an actress and European scenery always intrigues me.

The Prince and Me is a modern fairy-tale romance with a good dose of realism. A few details bothered me, particularly this one: I know of no college that would let a personal servant live in the dorms with their charge. But that aside, this film was good for breaking stereotypes. Can a playboy prince grow up and become a good king? Can royal parents care about the happiness and well-being of their children? Can old-fashioned midwestern parents be hip? Yes, a few scenes could startle PG-only watchers (though that is the rating given this film), but they are balanced by the dad telling Eddy, "We sleep with the bedroom door open." And I like a woman with goals and convictions. And I like it when stories tell the truth: that men prefer women who have goals and convictions. Will she marry the prince and live happily after? Ah, I guess you have to watch it for yourself.

The movie site has a funny and time-consuming little quiz that I took. I am/was a realist. The descriptor says, "You will not easily be swept off your feet" among other things. I like that. I like that I took some work - many tried and failed - but that it was accomplished in the end. By my prince.

Isn't that exactly how it should be? It speaks volumes for both of you, for your self-respect and value that you took the effort and for Mike's perseverance and eligibility that he met the challenge. All-round the best way to go!

Oh, and thanks for the review. I was intrigued by the previews but inclined to dismiss it as another predictable chick flick. Now it's back on my Maybe list.
