On Real Love

from Ben's mom

That we must love God with all our heart means that we must not love any other god with any of our heart....This does not mean that we must not love God's...material creatures. But we must love them as he commands...as his gifts, not as things in themselves; in other words, as they are, not as we imagine them to be. -- Peter Kreeft

This caused me to reflect on loving God's creatures as they are, not as we imagine them to be. It reminds me of anticipating whom one will marry. We daydream this perfect person (sometimes using a real one as a rough draft) and create a fantasy love. But REAL LOVE is so much better. I love my husband more because he has faults, scars, bad habits. After all, I have faults, scars, and bad habits. And it would be difficult to love someone with my whole self who was perfect when I am not. (Perhaps part of the challenge of loving God and why we never manage it completely.) It makes our love so real. Real love causes me to love here and now. And loving His fallen creatures is an act of love unto Him.
