from Ben's mom
Here are a few reviews from recent videos we've viewed. They both have New York City and Ireland in common; all resemblances end there.
In America takes me back to my Irish Studies day with another good film by Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father, My Left Foot, The Boxer). It took me awhile to see it because the trailer misled me to believe this film would be sci-fi and violent. It wasn't. The story is based on Jim Sheridan's own coming to America and has a young family-Mum, Dad, and two daughters starting out in the druggie-invested Hell's Kitchen. It is a good story about hope and family. Full of faith and miracles, I think Jim Sheridan is reaching toward the God he claims he no longer believes in. Warning: There is one crazy sex-scene between the married couple that involves some female nudity--quick, but descriptive. You'll know when it is coming though and can fast forward. Solemn film with some talented child actors.
Laws of Attraction was a risk I'm glad I took. It loosely resembles the 1949 classic Adam's Rib, a Katherine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy flick about a lawyer couple who end up opposing each other in court. Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan have notable chemistry, playing two divorce attorneys who make a habit of facing each other in court. Unfortunately, bad choices (much alcohol consumption) lead to more poor choices and ultimately a marriage. Will they stick with it? Some nice Irish scenery and actors and though there is some bad behavior, this film ultimately champions marriage.
