This week Ben is studying Shakespeare. He'd already read and watched a few of the Bard's historical plays as part of English history. But this week we are really getting into it. Last night at dinner he told Mike all about MacBeth, and did quite well. And then we watched Kenneth Branaugh's Much Ado About Nothing which Kyrie thoroughly enjoyed and Ben thought was "pretty good."
Since my first exposure to Shakespeare was in 8th grade and I didn't learn to love his work until I was living in England a decade later, I'm in awe that my children seem to get him. Ben and I have read shortened versions of the play together and yesterday he piped up that he really wanted to act in a Shakespeare play. We may have found an extracurricular interest for him; something that has eluded us thus far. (Unless you count XBox as extracurricular.)
We are less than four weeks from the end of school and Ben and I are competing about who is most happy about that. And yet we are both excited about 3rd grade and most of Ben's textbooks will arrive this week.

Duchess and Deux also love Shakespeare. Have you used the Bruce Coville picture books? That's what we started on but now we are reading the E. Nesbit books for stories he doesn't have. We haven't watched one yet, but I'm hoping to get to that before too long.
I haven't seen Bruce Coville. I will add that to the library list....Mike had to pick up our holds not too long ago and the librarian said, "Homeschooling?"
Much Ado About Nothing: I loved that movie.
One of my favorite high school teachers brought Shakespeares work to life and I always remember that about her and am thankful to her. I wonder why your kids "get" it so early in life? I think that is wonderful!!
