Adventures in the Capitol

  • Flew to D.C. with three kids. Everleigh lived up to the great reputation her siblings have earned on flights. She didn't want to board the plane and had to be carried on but then she did great, napping and playing.
  • Ben & Kyri think flying is going to Disneyland. They were fabulous. Then they road in a taxi without car seats which was beyond cool.
  • We arrived at our urban hotel to find that they only had a room with a double bed in it. (I had called ahead for two and they assured me they never fill up.) So we were upgraded to a suite. A weird one. Made for hosting cocktail parties and not for having children in. One double wall-bed. We obtained a twin rollaway for Kyri, a pack-n-play for Ev, and Ben slept on the loveseat. He had a rough night, pining away about his wonderful bed. Everyone slept though which is a novelty for our children.
  • Today was the one stormy day in a 2-week spread. Wind, rain, and oh-my-goodness humidity. I went out to get breakfast in a sweater and came back and changed to a short sleeve shirt. We visited with Brooks and Dana and walked to Union Station. Mike is in meetings and so I asked the kids when we ventured out if they wanted to go to a museum or go back to the hotel. Ben wanted to go back to the hotel and Kyrie was all about seeing the sites. She won.  So we walked from Union Station to the Capitol, past the peaceful protest against the Egyptian government, and all the way to the Museum of Natural History. Me, three kids, a stroller, and three of us needing a bathroom. Then we walked to Teaism for ginger scones and my friend Rachel met us there.  I told my kids I used to have a reputation for dragging people all over urban areas on foot. They are in fear. Sadly, this was our only day here. We have a couple of hours in the morning.
  • Kyrie's favorite thing: The Natural History Museum, feeding the carp at Teasim, and riding in Rachel's mini-cooper without a car seat. (Oops.)
  • Evie's: The carp at Teaism.
  • Ben: Feeding the carp at Teaism.

Glad Kyrie won out on not going back to the hotel. Sounds like Ben ended up having a good time (I hope). Such travelers you have: it is great.
And my generation survived without car seats so, as a rare happening, don't feel guilty.
