Summer Education

Ben finished 1st grade two weeks ago when he completed his math final. He completed Spelling, Language Arts, Math, History, and Logic with ease.

We aren't exactly schooling, but we are doing these things on a relaxed schedule. We still read a lot every day and we are focusing on the science books of Allan Fowler. There are probably over 100 of these short, picture-heavy little books and we are checking them out and speeding through them. They have the information for 1st grade but are very appealing to preschoolers. We are also going to Grow-A-Frog from a tadpole. Ben read about the mustard seed in Mark and proceeded to dump my spice container of mustard seeds into a planter. Sure enough! They've sprouted and we plan on growing a few other things in planters this summer.

Physical education is not a strong point with me or with Ben but he completed spring baseball and will be taking swimming lessons with Kyrie if it ever warms up.

And we will be continuing art education. We are going to be combining lots of library books with art projects relating to artistic styles. Art is interesting with an 18-month old but we did have some fun painting over the weekend while she napped.

Meanwhile, our local library is undergoing a remodel for two months and is closed all except for hold pickups and dropoffs. Sadly, they are taking a little longer to find things and having trouble keeping up with the 20 or so books a week we typically check out.

My friend Kerri did that grow-a-frog thing when she was in third grade... Froggie is still alive, and Kerri is going to be 35 in August!
