| A great class! |
I strive to let Ben & Kyrie participate in one extracurricular each season. The arrival of Everleigh put a temporary hold on that. But in February we resumed. They were given a choice between several activities and both chose gymnastics.
The gym where classes took place is huge and non-participants aren't allowed past the viewing area. Which is too far to get a picture.
I haven't been entirely impressed with the instruction. The teacher clearly goes through the motions without diverting her mind to what she's doing. To the point that Kyri has been with the wrong teacher the whole time because a non-instructor asked her to walk Kyri to her teacher in the gym area and she forgot to hand her off. Strange.
Regardless, both have enjoyed themselves. One child seems to show an aptitude; the other, not so much. (I'll let you determine who is who.)
I took gymnastics for several years, something my chiropractor determined without me telling him by a strange neck injury I have. (I try not to think of this when my kids are out there.) I finally gave it up when I routinely became too dizzy on the parallel bars and would collapse on dismount. (Probably the result of the neck injury. Smile.)
Kyrie's last class is tonight and we'll see where we go from here. She declares she "loves it" and likes it "so much better than ballet." Ben is skipping his last class, choosing instead to spend the week in Oregon with his grandparents.
While he was away, he was signed up for spring baseball taught by a homeschooling father in the area. He has the mind for baseball and I would like him to improve his athletic skills a bit more before he begins to become self-conscious. Like I did when I started school with P.E. shortly before my 9th birthday and discovered I was completely inept at athletics. This has led to a lifetime of feigned illness at church picnics and summer camp. Though I never did use the "oh, silly me! wearing high heels to a picnic" excuse like a certain housemate (D) of mine did.

McKenzie has been far more enthusiastic about gymnastics than Dawson was. And after about age 7, I see only a small handful of boys participating at their little end-of-quarter shows. Is this a gender thing?
The gym they've gone to has more males than I've expected though I have noted that several of their fathers are foreign-born. Mike was a little concerned it wasn't a masculine sport until he saw those boys a few years older who were obviously ripped. But Ben is just not that athletic. He was enthusiastic though. :)
Hey! It was the perfect excuse! I'm rather proud that I've gotten more athletic in my thirties than ever before (running and skiing!) but I still don't have the coordination for team sports. Balls flying through the air, ugh.
