Regional translation 101

I just caught a McDonalds commercial (that I can't find online) where a teenager gets his driver's license for the first time. He flashes his Oregon license. And his parents ask him to drive them to McDonalds to celebrate. As they are driving they reference him getting on "the Expressway."

I yelled at the TV: "We don't have expressways in Oregon."

Mike said, "What? What do you call them then?"

Me: "Freeways, maybe a highway. But expressways are east coast things. There isn't one in Oregon."

Mike admitted he had never heard the term in Washington but had never thought about it.

So McDonalds....Great ad with the Volvo wagon with the Oregon plate. Should have actually discussed it with an Oregonian.

That's great! Maybe you could write their marketing department and offer to be a paid Oregon consultant :)

Great idea! At the very least you could proof read any ads pertaining to Oregon or Washington.
