My cousin Jon graduated from nursing school this last weekend in Oregon. So after Kyri's last ballet class (for awhile) we left unpacked boxes behind and headed south for a family weekend. We made the graduation and watched Jon get "pinned" and I was pleased to discover that Portland Community College has a "lactation room" at the Sylvania campus. Can't say I noticed this when I was a student there.
We picnicked as a family after the graduation and Everleigh met her great-grandmother for whom she's named for the first time. She also met her Aunt Carolyn and Uncle Larry who reside in Maryland.
Sunday was a comedy of errors. Kyri and I went for a little swim in the hotel pool while Ben watched from the sidelines and refused to go in.
Mike and my dad had arranged to golf at noon with family and a friend. My mom and I needed to take my Grandma to the airport in the afternoon and our car seats five. So my dad and Mike took Ben golfing. Only 6-year olds are not allowed on the course.
We were looking for non-existent parking at the Rose Gardens in Washington Park (during Rose Festival, no less) when we discovered we had forgotten the Handicapped parking permit. Then we learned that Mike and Ben were enjoying snacks in the clubhouse instead of golfing.
My grandma agreed to go to the airport early so we could get Ben (who wouldn't fit in our car) so Mike could pick up the last 9 holes. So we dropped her early only to get stuck on the freeway that was a parking lot. (It is hard to drive in the first sunshine of the season I guess.) We finally made it to Ben, just in time, and my dad decided to pack it in too. Had we known this we wouldn't have had to drive out there to get him.
Ev was not so happy about the car but somehow we made it across Portland to visit my Aunt Lee in Clackamas. The day ended with a nice dinner with my parents before we headed home.
It was great to see family and though full of stressful moments, worth it. We hope to do that again sometime and see all the friends we didn't have time to see this time.
