We can't get enough of books and I've appreciated the anthologies that have been recommended to me. For anyone who wants some great book lists, here are my three favorite anthologies so far:
Honey for a Child's Heart by Gladys Hunt
Books Children Love by Elizabeth Laraway Wilson
The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease.
These three anthologies have kept us in great books for a while now.
Jim Trelease's book has a host of research on how the single most critical factor to your child's education is reading to them aloud. One fact I found very interesting is that while American instruction in reading begins at age 5 and Finnish instruction begins at 7 (and then is only a half-day of school), the Finns (in larger classroom sizes) have surpassed the American children in reading by age 9.

I was so excited to see your post--I just finished reading Jim Trelease's read-aloud book and loved it! Partly because of having just read that but mostly because Amelia devours every book we bring into the house, we ended up at the library 4 times last week! We'll definitely be using his anthology. And after what you said about I STINK I'm looking forward to finding/reading it with my girls! :-)
