Day 20

We had a friend over for dinner last night and love languages came up. Evie is already letting us know that she demands time. She wants our attention focused on her and we are rewarded with lots of smiles if we stick with her plan.

It started me thinking about how we love God in our own special language. When I'm not spending concentrated time in God's presence I start to doubt that I really love Him all that much. I feel I'm neglecting Him and He knows it. And that makes perfect sense for someone whose love language is time/presence. It also helped me to understand why I never do so well at verbal praise and worship. I just never "feel it." Verbal affirmation is appreciated but definitely not near the top of ways I give and receive love.

God is clear at times that He wants our love HIS way. I'm sure He works with us but a few of the stories that came to me were Cain's sacrifice of fruit when God demanded a lamb. And then there is the verse that says He desires our obedience more than our sacrifice. And "If you love me, you will do what I ask." (I think I've used this one on my kids too.)

And then there was Martha in the kitchen showing Jesus her love while Mary sat at His feet. Jesus preferred Mary's quality time and attention in His presence to Martha's acts of service.

If we will work to learn how to love those we care about the way they best understand/feel love, are we willing to love God the way He desires?
