18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. 20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.-Phil. 3: 18-21, NKJV
Not liking that "whose god is their belly...who set their mind on earthly things." Very grateful for forgiveness. Frequent forgiveness.
The Greeks (whose language was used in writing this passage) believed the center of emotion was the stomach. They were on to something. I read an article on "emotional eating" recently that hit home. The stomach seems to be the place where we begin to put our emotions first, instead of governing them. And then the rest follows.
Food is a gift from God. I don't believe in complete abstinence from much. I'm pretty convinced God is ok with pumpkin pie, dark chocolate, and creme brulee. But when my mind is on it instead of on Him who is the giver of good gifts, I have a problem.
I have a problem.
