And what about homeschooling?

I've been asked a few times about homeschooling in emails. A lot of education is happening these days. I just know most people are thinking of some orderly approach to reading, writing and arithmetic. Which is my last priority right now.

First of all, I'm not an early reading advocate. Studies show that children who are not taught reading early surpass their early reading peers in reading skills and other skills by 3rd grade. The non-readers are usually better at problem-solving. I have a child who caught on to reading and who needs to be more equipped with practical, problem-solving skills. So we are working on those. He loves to read and is caught reading throughout the day. Not so worried about "teaching" it.

Second, life skills do need to be taught right now. Ben is less than practical. Ask if he can get you the cloth diapers we use for spit ups and he stares at you blankly. You can give him detailed instructions on where things are kept and he still stares at you blankly. He also is sooooo visual that he has trouble following verbal instructions. We are practicing these skills every day. I write his chores down on a wipe-off board every morning and he works to wipe that board clean. Since both of his parents function that way, I shouldn't be surprised.

Third: HA! Homeschooling? I feel accomplished if I get dressed and make my bed every day. I get bonus points if the kids get fed within an hour of meal times.
