Thanks to Becky for her solid advice. I went with it. And thanks to my husband who let me pay more and get a vacuum with a 5-year warranty instead of a 1-year. I didn't realize until I had used the new one how really horrible the old one was. It had great features but I guess it didn't really vacuum well. The new one is fabulous.
So the call came. The vacuum is dead. The vacuum repair shop agreed to take care of the burial.
I'm very attracted to the models you can use to shampoo your carpets as well but the only affordable one I've found is a Bissell and I've just put my 4-year old Bissell to rest. I've read a lot of reviews and I'm still confused. So I'm soliciting anything I can from you. HELP!

We have a Hoover SteamVac silver. This is an older model (now)rug cleaner. It does NOT also work as a vacuum. It does okay, but it is not really a steam machine as there is no on-board heater to keep the water hot and turn it to steam. I would recommend that you get a good vacuum and rent a steam machine when you need one. We did get a nice vacuum, a Riccar model, from

This is the company that used to be near where we lived in Tacoma. They moved, but did great work in keeping my sewing machines running. The vacuum does a good job with all of the pet hair. You might want to check them out.
I'm glad I could help.
