Great Americans

"If Ed Meese is not a good man, there are no good men." -Ronald Reagan

Today I was able to meet former Attorney General (AG) Edwin Meese III. Mike picked up him from the airport this morning while I dropped the kids.

The event celebrated the launch of the Constitutional Law Center and a lot of people did a lot to get this event to come together. About 140 people were in attendance. I was able to sit at a table between him and my husband which was a tremendous honor. There were some great Americans there. I chatted with a man who was friends with Mr. Meese from way back in their army days (in the 60s).

Mr. Meese had remembered a thing or two Mike must have told him about me on the way to the event and spoke to me about that. I loved hearing him answer the questions asked of him at my table. He is thoughtful and intelligent but the thing that impressed me was the kindness in his eyes. I hope God grants him long life and he works for a long time.

But I also know that he has more good years behind him than in front. And I'm glad I know a few good men (and women) who can carry on his legacy in the coming years. And to live with and love one of them is about as good as it gets.

Mike said a few words and did well. And I enjoyed the words of many who told me how impressed they were with him. One man asked who I was and when I told him handed me $1000 check to give toward Mike's work. (It made me smile.)

I think he is amazing for all the reasons others do: his intellect, work ethic, values, and strength. But the things that make him most amazing to me are the things the masses will never know: that he hurries home at the end of the day and plays with his children, that he cleans the bathrooms for me when I'm pregnant so I don't inhale cleaner fumes (the bathrooms need me to be pregnant again), that he never criticizes a meal no matter how badly I screw it up, and that he is a good son and brother as well as father and husband. He is teaching his children to pray.

Somewhere down the road, Mike may or may not be as well known (in conservative circles) as Ed Meese. But from where I sit, he is a great American and he makes me proud.
