A few months ago our 5-year old laptop started slowing significantly. Nothing we did made any difference and we realized it was time to spring for a new computer. We found a great deal (it pays to shop around) on a desktop, monitor, and printer and my work productivity shot up. A job that used to take 45 minutes now takes 30 minutes. We "gave" Ben our old one and he was thrilled to have his own computer. Until he discovered it wasn't connected to the internet. Then he convinced me to let him "try" the new one. He hasn't looked at that old laptop since. Fortunately we can lock this one and despite numerous attempts, he still hasn't hacked the password.
Then last week while doing laundry I started smelling burning smells. And then suddenly the lid to the washer wouldn't stay up when I was loading. We had an old used set that we got from friends when we moved here, so I wasn't terribly surprised. So Thursday and yesterday, I read consumer reviews, and looked on web sites. Thanks to some friends who just built their own house, we skipped the Costco set and found a great one at Home Depot that gave us a lot more bang for our buck. On Thursday I'll be doing a lot of laundry.
Our most painless new thing though is a brand new IPOD that we got for free for opening a new checking account and using the free VISA check-card that comes with it. The whole thing cost us nothing; we didn't even have to order checks. We even made .05 the first month because we went with the interest-bearing checking account.
Now we hope we are done with new things for awhile (unless they are free). We can't afford any more fun.

Any chance that free iPod was from a nation-wide company of banks? I haven't noticed any promos like that around here.
No luck. It is a local bank that I've had a savings account with for awhile. (So we knew they weren't scamming.) -rlr
Sweet deal on the iPod, so jealous there. ;-) Great deal on the washer, I'm sure you're looking forward to getting all the clothes clean again. As for computer -- I'm so glad you guys found a good deal. Our lap top we got 5 years ago has gotten so slow... N finally said, "That's it! We have to get a new one." The speed of a new computer is amazing!
What bank did you open the account with? Are they still doing that promo? Hmmmmmmm
