Movie Day

from the mom

Our local cinema shows movies for free several days a week in the summer for kids. I thought that it would be a fun diversion. Today's movie was Jonah, a Veggie Tales movie. Ben has watched it on DVD and liked it.

When I asked if he wanted to go, he said, "No. It is too scary." I was perplexed. This morning he dragged his feet, claiming he wanted to stay in bed. Then he said it was "too scary for Kyri." Hmmm....

I loaded up on snacks and juice boxes and off we went. They even provided booster seats. Kyri thought it was great. She sat right down, looked around, munched on snacks. Ben sat with his ears covered and a concerned look on his face for 45 minutes. At that point, Kyri decided it would be much more interesting to get up and circulate and attempt to meet all the other kids in the theatre. My attempts to prevent this met with hysterical threats to shriek loud enough to be heard above the movie.

I turned to Ben and asked, "Do you want to go home?" He leaped off his booster seat and headed down the stairs. I grabbed my purse and Kyri, leaving behind the boosters and Kyri's spilled veggie sticks I had intended to clean up. He was waiting in the hall for me.

He has been to several movies in the cinema before and did fine. Both M and I are relatively perplexed. I asked him if it was too loud and he said, "Yes." "Do you want to go to the movies again?" "No." And that was that.

We can't do movies at the theater, either. Too loud and too tense. (The only way they would watch the opening sequence of Cars was if we turned the volume off.) Ben's always been sensitive to noises like Addie is, and he may have been afraid of sudden loud noises that would jar him. I'm impressed that Kyri lasted that long! Sorry that your free diversion is ruined, though.

I didn't know they had booster seats! why didn't I think to ask for one?

Anyway, that is to bad they didn't want to stay for to long. Poor Ben. Sounds like Kyri did pretty well. Maybe they would have liked it more if Jade was there;) well...maybe not, they may have just played the whole time. hee, hee. At least it was free!
