Ok, I read the article on your sidebar and I have to go with Kim, the last commentor. "Don't take things so seriously!" I'd probably lean towards saying, "We're expecting" and I don't expect that anyone is confusing who is doing what. I also think its annoying when men try to "win brownie points" by saying that women are superior (in that, according to the article, that they can carry new life). I for one would be happy to give that task to the other sex! =D
At any rate, I dont' think anyone consciously means anything horrible by it and its a time of sweet celebration -- I think it's normal and ok for a guy to say "we" because they are a married couple. It's a two becoming one sort of deal and what better picture do you get of that than with pregnancy?
I think the article tries to tackle too many points at once, but I share his frustration at the misuse of the phrase. I'm not quibbling with the philosophical undertones, but it's just sloppy grammar. Would a guy go around announcing, 'We're ovulating this week!'?? Obviously that's a bit TMI, but people do seem to announce with alacrity when they're trying these days, so they're both on the same personal information level. (Both inappropriate, IMO, but people don't seem to be substituting one for the other.) I think it's much more tactful as well as accurate to say, 'We're expecting!' Is that such a hard mouthful to get out?
