Books, Movies

from the mom

Movies I've seen in the last couple of months that I liked: Breach, Pride and Hairspray. (Don't miss John Travolta in his funniest role ever.)

Books: The Language of God challenged me to think in a realm I'm not very comfortable with: science. Fortunately this book is written for the non-scientist. I still am not entirely sure of what I believe about our beginnings but I am a little more confident about stating what I have always believed: We like to stick God in our box and make Him play by our rules. He is just TOO BIG for that.

I'm reading Sheldon van Auken's A Severe Mercy. I'm not done with the book yet but will say I've appreciated a lot of the perspective despite not enjoying the style. Typically poets are not good prose writers and it is easy to get frustrated with the writer's flowery language. But I could relate to an American's love of England and subsequent culture shock and the story of the web of faith that weaves itself into his life is fascinating.
