from Ben's mom
Back in 2001, I introduced M to the miniseries The Winds of War which follows a military family through the build-up to Pearl Harbor and the US entrance into World War II. I'd read Herman Wouk's book (and the sequel "War and Remembrance" which was also made into a miniseries) and watched the series before and loved it enough to want to show it again. Recently he discovered the library had it on DVD and decided we should watch it again. It is a great help for remembering signicant dates in history and is a fascinating story. The only thing that doesn't make sense is why they cast a 39-year old Jan Michael Vincent to play a 23-year old and 44-year old Ali McGraw to play a woman in her late 20s. They both look too old and McGraw overacts. Otherwise the casting is superb, even if you find yourself wanting to toss some of the characters off a ship.

My take... the young woman taking after the old Captain/Admiral was the most age related mistake. Regarding Jan and Ali, remember, it would be very difficult to find a Hollywood actor and actress under 30 who have heard of WW2!
