Taking Responsibility

from Ben's mom

Ben is in some kind of growth spurt and therefore, sleeping a lot more, which has been very nice for me. I get a nap, quiet time, and work time (usually) while he naps for 3 hours.

He has also been VERY pleasant the last couple of days. I'm reading a book on 2-year old development and it describes the process of testing boundaries and independence and then settling in and then doing another bout of testing. We're in between right now and I am enjoying it to the fullest.

One of the things that is funny is the responsibility Ben takes for making sure all the doors are shut. If he finds a bathroom door open, he will go in and flush the toilet and then exit the bathroom and shut the door. (I wish this indicated potty-training readiness but the positive signs end there.) He also makes certain our closet door and the guest bedroom door remain closed. He is ever-vigilant.

Ben finds it tempting to throw his toys down the stairs so I've taken to putting him in his room and shutting the door while he plays with especially tempting toys like blocks and Legos. Today I was working downstairs while he had play time. When I came up I found his door still shut but his location had moved to our bedroom. I knew he could open some doors (my private showers came to an end a week or so ago when he learned to open the bathroom door), but it was the first time he had opened his.

Meanwhile, his current favorite DVD is a Veggie Tales story about Miriam watching over her new little brother Moses. We talk together about the new baby and he takes to patting my stomach from time to time. He seems to have full comprehension that he is becoming the big brother.

Addie did the door-shutting thing, too! In fact, she would march into someone else's house and promptly shut all their doors, also.

It's fun having a child with even a vague idea of Baby, isn't it?

I heard someone once say, "babies and flowers grow in their beds." I think teenagers could be added to that, too.
