from Ben's mom
We watched The Great Raid Sunday night. Somehow this movie went under the radar and didn't attract the attention of Saving Private Ryan. It should have. It is about war and therefore violent, but the true story of the 1945 rescue of 500 prisoners of war from the Cabanatuan Japanese POW camp in the Philippines is worth knowing. In addition to the brave actions of the 6th Ranger Battalion, the Filipino resistance assisted in the rescue. And while we focus on the best stories of World War II, one of the worst is the leaving behind of many American POWs in the Philippines to go fight on another front.
After watching a good war movie, Fort Lewis started to spend the week in all night drills and so we spent Sunday and Monday nights listening to cannons, etc.... Supposedly it continues through the week, but I didn't hear anything but the helicopter last night. This, in addition, to multiple train "earthquakes" every day makes for some excitement in our small-town existence.
I have felt significantly better the last two days and have accomplished a bit more. I put on an Indian feast last night; Ben was not appreciative but his Dad was. This involved cooking for several hours; several minutes has been too much throughout this pregnancy. So that is cause for rejoicing!

Sorry you didn't like the food Ben but it was wonderful to hear that Mom is feeling better. Hopefully more days will be better from now on. Judy
YAY for Indian food! I will have to send you a few more recipes, I have made a few good ones in the past few days. The more you make them the faster it seems to get when cooking. :)

Oh, we want to see that! If it's out on DVD now we'll have to watch for it to come in at our library.
Michael's brother got us The Great Raid for his birthday this year and we watched it for the first time a few months ago. Great movie! I don't know why it didn't get more attention, either; it was very well-made and extremely accurate.
Glad you're doing a bit better!!
The Great Raid was very good, but no where near the class of Saving Private Ryan, the Longest Day, Band of Brothers, or other WWII movies.
In my opinion.
But I still enjoyed it.
How about "The Great Escape?" That's my favorite WWII movie, and the book it's based on is even better.

I really don't like war movies in general but, after seeing The Great Raid last week, I would recommend it to everyone! It was indeed very patriotic and inspiring. It made me proud to be an American!
Ah, yes, the Great Escape. Another classic.
