Earthquakes

from Ben's mom

I spent my freshman year of college living in Southern California. I woke up from a nap one afternoon feeling like I was in a rolling ship. My roommate (a native Californian) was standing in the doorway calming telling me to join her. I thought the whole 6.1 experience was great.

Good thing! We live next door to the AmTrak Station and obviously that mean that the train track goes right past our place. (Attn: Worriers--The tracks are fenced in and no wandering little boy will get even remotely close.) All kinds of trains (freight and passenger) go by all day long. They are very quiet; only whistle occasionally. However, the earth rumbles and the house shakes and it takes me back to life in southern California.

My office building is right next to some heavily used industrial tracks and multiple times a day my monitor is in danger of vibrating off its stand. I keep wondering if this arrangement is creating a Peter and the Wolf attitude in me for the day will come when a real earthquake will hit and I'll keep working merrily along wondering why this particular train decided to take the power with it. It's either become competely desensitized or freak out every hour. If you hear about an office building with one person buried inside (should said quake occur) you can bet it'll be me.

Being from So. Cal., I think earthquakes are fun too. Not being from the mid-west, where we current live, I'm totally freaked out about a possible tornado. :-P
