Being Surprised is Cheaper

from Ben's mom

We've been asked a lot lately if we know yet if the baby is a boy or a girl. After discussing it with each other and the midwife and doing a lot of soul-searching, we've come to the conclusion that spending $500+ is a bit extravagant to find out the gender. Since the ultrasound is medically unnecessary unless I have some kind of warning symptom that suggests I might have a placenta complication, we decided to skip the test. This was not easy for us. M really would like to be prepared for a boy or a girl and I have to admit that it was nice to know last time. But this will make the surprise advocates very happy, right?

Another question we get a lot is if we have picked out names. Yes to the boy. But we aren't telling.... Not that we haven't told many of you already because we have had our next boy named since Ben was born. The girl is more of a challenge. We have one possibility but we are still working on some kind of agreement. I like unique names for girls; M is more traditional. We have ruled out Shiloh (Jolie-Pitt), Suri (Holmes-Cruise), Grier (Shields-Henchy), Apple (Paltrow-Martin), and Cocoa (Cox-Arquette). And since Hebrew names are trendy with unwed celebrity couples, we may just decide to rule those out as well.

You could always let the child grow up and pick its own name...

:-p

Yeah, but then you get a name like Peekaboo Street. Of course... if your child ends up an Olympic sports medalist... that may not be so bad.

A friend of mine told me that if I wanted to know the gender of our baby I could go to the bathroom in a bucket of drano. Apparently it turns pink if its a girl and turns something muddy-ish if a boy. I prefer the ultrasound but apparently this drano test has met with some success.

If you try it, let me know. I may try it AFTER the ultrasound just to see if its true. ;)

J jokes you can always call him "Honorable Son Number II" or "Honorable Daughter Number I."

Last night was fun. I hope we didn't talk too much...I think my Pepsi was spiked with "tell it like it is" juice...
