from Ben's mom
Every fall when Thanksgiving rolls around much too late in the fall and much too close to Christmas, I wish I were Canadian.
Why couldn't those who set the date have thought of the thousands of American college students (especially the ones on semester systems) who would be completely burnt out and needing a break in October? And far from their families with whom they would want to spend Thanksgiving but have a hard time justifying buying two plane tickets four weeks apart (or less)?
And as someone who really likes Christmas and would like it to last a little longer, Thanksgiving in October would allow more time for Christmas and make it less frantic. People would have more time for shopping and thus the stores wouldn't be a mass of crazed people trying to figure out what to get Uncle Martin this year. There would be more time for baking, decorating, and Christmas music sales would go up because you could justify a few more CDs if you could play them for 2 months instead of just one a year. And I might be able to get my Christmas cards out by December 1 every year.
I know Starbucks would go for it.

You sure have it all thought out! Perhaps you should submit your request to congress? And speaking as a Canadian, July 1st is a pretty good holiday, too! :)
Christmas cards???!!! Is it that time already? I am not ready. We just had Thanksgiving for heavens sake. Oh, the stress is starting!
Hope Ben's mom is feeling better.
I can't remember the last time I sent a Christmas card. And Christmas letters don't seem justified unless you have a child or are a globe trotter. I agree Thanksgiving and Christmas are pretty darn close! We did our shopping for N's side of the family 4 days before Thanksgiving so we could be there when they opened their gifts. Talk about rushing Christmas shopping. It was a little stressful. :-p Anyways... nice point. But then... we wouldn't have Columbus Day AND Thanksgiving... maybe we'd get Veterans day!
I think Thanksgiving should be in August. There aren't any good holidays in August.

I wouldn't mind moving Thanksgiving to sometime else. However, no holiday should come within the three weeks before Election Day. And Thanksgiving should be after harvest is over (because that is a big part of what you are giving thanks for, right?). So I guess we could move it up a week or two and still be "safe."
