Tornado

from Ben's mom

Saturday afternoon we were returning our rental car to the airport when we nearly drove through a tornado. Mike was driving the rental car and I was following in a friend's car. When I saw it, I first thought a plane had crashed as we were very near the airport and I could see debris swirling in what I thought was dark smoke. But it was too close not to be able to see the plane, so I shelved that explanation. When we were safely past it Mike stopped on the side of the road and ran back and said, "Was it me or was that a tornado?" He had seen the arm swirl across the road in front of him and then it appeared to pull back just as he crossed it. He very nearly drove through it. As a friend from Oklahoma said, "Generally, I try to avoid driving in tornadoes." In the years we lived in northern Virginia and went through several tornado watches, we never actually saw one. And then while back on vacation, we finally did. That was as close as I need to get.

I was driving home from the Frederick area Saturday evening, and saw what certainly looked like tornado damage! But the next day, my extended family didn't believe there had been any tornado, and insisted the damage must have been caused by downdrafts or some other cause. I never followed up to see whether there had been a tornado reported or not, but feel a little vindicated that my diagnosis was accurate. =)

Glad God kept you guys safe. That's excitement you don't want to get too close to! I'm glad, too, that you've arrived back home safely.
