Quote of the Day

"The evangelical world wants principles more than the Prince." - Archbishop Randy Sly

Why do former evangelicals turn Episcopals/Catholics and then say derogatory remarks about those who truly ARE evangelicals? What makes you wander from a place of grace to a place of man made rules? I find little real accountability in any church, but most assuredly hypocrisy in every one of them.

Evangelicals have their own set of "man made" rules: don't drink, don't smoke, don't go to movie theaters or listen to rock music. They also have their own liturgy--a greeting, three hymns, Scripture reading, meet and greet, sermon, hymn, alter call and closing prayer. Heck, they even have their own traditions--the Baptist church I attended as a child had a potluck the first Sunday evening of every month.

An episcopal form of government DOES have a rigorous accountability system for the clergy AND the people...especially if you're going to confession.

I think the intent of the quote was to point out our overdependence on formulas when our true need is for Christ.

Bishop Sly is an evangelical and the quote was in the context of a sermon in which he had analyzed his emphasis and discovered that he preached on the epistles far more than the Gospels. He was making the statement as he vowed to remember that "it's all about Jesus." I'm not about the divisions in the church. As Paul pointed out, Christ cannot be divided. We shouldn't be either.
