from Ben's mom
I've spent the last two days really thinking about Lent and how ready I am for a good Lent. (Warning: I will need to be reminded twenty minutes into it.) I feel so fat--and I don't mean in the physical sense (though I can't deny feeling it in the physical sense as well). I just wonder if someone called me to do a really good prayer marathon if I could even manage a mile.
I discovered a valued former coworker was released on Friday. "Released" is the proper word because I think circumstances probably left him feeling more relieved than anything. Some things are good to lose.
So I've been thinking about what to "lose" for Lent. I have settled on movies--I love a good story but I think I have come to rely on movies as a way to turn off my brain and lately I've been hit with how much I need to be praying. Ben will be happy as he has lost his initial interest in movies (which is good) and would like his parents to play with him instead.
I believe that it is good to do something for Lent, and not just give things up. I think it will have to be prayer, something I am not good at. When I hunker down and even start to be disciplined I am always amazed at how much more real God seems to me. And how much starts to happen. (I will post more later for anyone who might be misled into believing that anything we do or don't do for Lent has anything to do with salvation. It doesn't.)
But since it is still Fat Tuesday, we're going to IHOP.

I've been wondering if you knew about the latest 'disappearance' until I read your blog this morning. It is difficult to have the appropriate words to express how sad my heart is, but our good friend says he is at perfect peace.
Love to the three of you! ~SW
Could you shed some light on why our friend left? Seems that many "abrupt releases" have occurred over the last year and some were told they could not speak of the details of their leaving. Is this correct? Why? That seems very wrong. And the concerns that many have for said institution are apparently warranted. So what does the future look like for your former place of employment? I am so sad. ;-(
"He who grows in grace remembers that he is but dust, and he therefore does not expect his fellow Christians to be anything more. He overlooks ten thousand of their faults, because he knows his God overlooks twenty thousand in his own case." ~ Charles Spurgeon
Talking to God (otherwise known as prayer) is much more effective than talking to one another (generally known as gossip).
