Outdoor Movies

Riding in the car
Mom: I hope our kids remember us as fun parents.
Dad: Why?
Mom: Well, I just remember all the cool things my parents did with us. Riding on the back of Dad's bike, going to play tennis, going for hikes to waterfalls, driving to the beach in a VW bug.
Dad: I think we will be.
Mom: I hope so.
Ben: Okay, where are we going this time?

Saturday night found me at the outdoor movies with Mom and Dad. It was so cool! There were fun people to watch, seagulls flying overhead, and a Sponge Bob cartoon. After that, we watched Roman Holiday. I thought it was on the boring side and wanted to wiggle and talk, but Mom and Dad were real into it. Since I couldn't convince them to talk back I finally fell asleep. So Mom has more info on the movie.

Roman Holiday has several things going for it. 1) Audrey Hepburn in her first starring role; 2) Gregory Peck as the handsome American reporter; and 3) it was filmed entirely on location in Rome. The last point alone was enough to make it enjoyable for a happily married couple who honeymooned in Rome. "Look, there's Trevi Fountain." "Ooh, doesn't the Coliseum look even more ancient in black and white." You get the point. The plot is simple enough. The princess gets fed up with her obligations and wanders off in a sleeping-drug-induced state to be discovered by the calloused American reporter, who, shockingly (ah-hem) falls for her. Will they live happily ever after? Pick it up at your local video store.

The Summer Outdoor Cinema is drawing to an end and we just discovered it. It brought back memories of Screen on the Green in D.C. and fun memories of walking across Washington afterwards with friends including Dana Robinson, Christina Thornton, Kris Gray, and the very mysterious Mike Reitz. The latter two decided to serenade us with a collection of U2 songs. Later we went with the Mehrens. The movies are fuzzy memories but the good times are not.

Outdoor summer cinema is such a good idea. We learned last night that the idea originated in London and in a quick internet search I discovered that it still goes on. Atlanta also runs a Screen on the Green for our southern friends.
